Law & Order Toronto: Criminal Intent

Just saw on the show’s TwitX account that the show has been renewed for two seasons, Seasons 2 and 3. Both are said to air in 2025.

I’m halfway through the season now - watched the first 5 episodes, I’m enjoying the show quite a bit, all 5 episodes I’ve seen have been solid. I like that this show closely follows the format of original classic CI, all of the cases have been interesting with good detective work and I like the 2 main detectives, Graff and Bateman. I do wish the prosecutor would get something to do other than just pop in for a brief scene, he’s used less than original CI used Carver and I thought Carver was very underused.
I look forward to watching more and I’m glad the show has been renewed.
It’s nice to have a new version of CI with original cases, plus new Mothership cases, for a long time the only L&O on was SVU and SVU is garbage now.

I was sort of shocked, in episode 4, “Crack Reporter”, how graphic the actual murder was, with the slit throat and all.

But I do agree, the show is very solid, and I’m glad it was already renewed for another two seasons.

American CI had a few gruesome murders as well, but yeah the throat slashing in episode 4 was rather graphic. That episode was clearly inspired by the scandals involving former Toronto Mayor Rob Ford.
I’ve enjoyed each episode, I think episode 2 or 3 are my favorite so far. I’m glad it’s been renewed as well, like I said it’s awesome to have a new CI on, along with new Mothership episodes, I’m glad the L&O franchise is having something of a resurgence now after years of being just SVU which is running on fumes and is lousy now.

Well, we already know that one episode in one of the upcoming seasons will involve an encampment site. Here is an article about a bit of controversy about Toronto CI filming such an episode.

Interesting - it’s nothing new for L&O shows to deal with controversial real life issues - not the first time they’ve pissed people off in doing so either. Glad there will be more episodes in the future.

Just watched episode 6 - this was my favorite episode yet - really strong plot about the grocery price fixing scheme - very good investigation and case, and I liked that the prosecutor got a bit more to do at the end. And the final confrontation of the perps reminded me of American CI, but still Graff and Bateman are their own characters and not just carbon copies of Goren/Eames. I’m really enjoying this show.

Yeah, I knew Crown Prosecutor Theo Forrester got used a bit better in this episode, but I didn’t want to spoil anything for you. So I kept quiet. :sunglasses:

Episode 7 was another good one - I liked how they played the scummy radio host and the producer against each other and I liked how Graff and Bateman did an equal role in the final takedown, I also liked the Bateman/Forrester scene - it’s interesting how they used each others first names - the first time we’ve seen that as this show doesn’t use first names much, even less than American CI.
The only thing I didn’t get was why did the singer agree to sleep with the scummy host again, she knew he was a sadistic abuser? Felt like a convenient plot device to give the host an alibi and further the plot along.

I got the impression she was scared it would ruin her music career if she refused, since the dirtball had her on his radio show, giving her exposure, etc.

Maybe that is the case, that she was afraid the creep would sabotage her career. Good episode overall, while it was somewhat obvious who the villains would be, I didn’t see it that the other minion of the host would be the one who did the murder, I figured the producer did it all. I liked the sting operation where they nabbed the killer in the park, a nice bit of action on a show that doesn’t have a lot of it - I like occasional action scenes but not in every episode, I like that this show doesn’t waste time with foot chases the way a lot of Mothership revival episodes do.

If anyone has been watching the show, I was alerted (thanks, @Xeliou66 !) that episode 8 was actually the file for Episode 1, again.

This has been corrected. So, enjoy!

I watched episode 9 and it was another stellar episode - interesting case with the serial killer and having to race against the clock to stop him, I liked the psychological profiling done by Graff in the episode. I also liked the larger role for Forrester, and the scenes near the end where all 4 main characters were discussing the case and getting to the bottom of it… I noticed they used first names again - both the inspector and Forrester called Graff “Henry” I think that’s the first time we heard someone call him that.
One of my favorite episodes overall, I think it and episode 6 are my two favorites.
Just have episodes 8 and 10 to watch now. This is a very good show.

I finished Toronto CI’s first season today - I really enjoyed it - all 10 episodes were good. The finale was one of the best, really great plot about the woman hiding her identity, Forrester mentioned the real case the backstory was based on of the woman getting out of jail after being complicit in murder with her boyfriend, the real case has inspired several tv show episodes. I called the shot that the daughter would be the killer as soon as the mom’s identity was revealed but it was still enjoyable to watch play out. And I take it Graff’s father was a murderer just like Goren’s bio dad was - first piece of info we’ve gotten about Graff, I just hope they don’t give him personal baggage in future episodes the way original CI did with Goren in season 6.
Toronto CI feels like the first 5 seasons of American CI, and that’s great - strong cases and detective work with minimal personal crap. I’m glad there will be more episodes.

Glad you enjoyed S1, @Xeliou66 !

Yeah, even though Karla Homolka was already explicitly mentioned in the last episode, it was clearly yet another take on that case, which was apparently quite a big deal. (And - like the episode - from what I read, Homolka changed her name once leaving prison and moved out of the area.)

I thought the actresses playing both the mother and daughter were great.

And Graff, yeah. I know I said his revelation was another big parallel with Goren. It will be interesting to see how the Canadian version plays the story of Graff’s issues out.

Glad this has been renewed for two additional seasons, too!

It’s great to have a new version of CI - this show is strong, I like the complex plots and good detective work, just like American CI had. I like the 4 characters as well. Now just please don’t turn the show into a soap opera the way American CI did in season 6, that was the only thing that concerned me from the finale - I’m fine with getting some info about the characters but American CI was really weakened by the infusion of personal baggage. Hopefully this show stays the same with its plot centric format, I’m really glad there will be more episodes.
I enjoyed all 10 episodes, hard to say which were my favorites.

I’m really glad the L&O franchise has come back to life - with the Mothership revival plus this version of CI, nice to have new episodes of L&O shows that aren’t the Olivia Benson hour aka SVU!!

I think Toronto CI is better written than the Mothership revival, there are fewer flaws in the writing - the Mothership revival needs better legal writing, whereas there aren’t any glaring flaws on Toronto CI.

I’m glad there will be more episodes in the future.

The Mothership could benefit from some true legal advisors. I don’t think I have seen one episode in the revival dive into case studies since it came back.

I do think LOTCI is well written. Tassie Cameron, who developed this version, did her homework when adapting from LOCI. I hope that continues in Seasons 2 and 3 and there will be no “sophomore slump”. But I’m confident she knows what she is doing.

Yeah the Mothership needs improvement for the legal writing, all too often they have some mid trial twist that doesn’t make sense and makes the DAs look inept, or they have them lose a motion on flimsy grounds. I like the characters on the Mothership and the detective side is really strong, but the legal writing needs a boost.

Toronto CI is well written and doesn’t have any glaring flaws. I did guess the perps more often than not but that’s just because I’ve seen a lot of crime/mystery shows. I really like how it closely follows classic CIs formula. I hope they go into court at some point, it would be interesting to see Canadian court and see Forrester in a larger role. That was my one complaint about American CI was that they didn’t do enough legal stuff.
