Unusual experiences, strange happenings, inexplicable events, weird occurrences. From the downright bizarre to the everyday mundane, if you have a personal tale that defies rational explanation we’d love you to share it with us.
Growing up, I lived in a house that I would say was haunted. Strange noises, things falling by themselves, stuff disappearing for months only to return in the spot you looked for it a million times before. Everyone in my family had experiences and even friends of the family who stayed over.
My first experience was when I was around 7 years old. It was a Saturday morning and I was in my room playing around. I was rolling up Kleenex into balls and trying to toss them into my wastebasket and doing a poor job. I would keep getting up to collect the tissue balls and jumping back onto the bed to try again. Anyway, at one point this horrible loud growl came from underneath my bed. I never ran so fast in my life out of my room, down the stairs, and into the basement where my whole family was gathered. Never played that game again.
Tale #2.
As a kid I used to wake up early on Saturday mornings, think 5-6 AM, and watch The Muppet Babies, Garfield and Friends, and all my other Saturday morning cartoons before the rest of my family got up.
So one Saturday morning I start heading down the basement steps and about 3-4 steps from the bottom I look up and there is a man standing before me at the foot of the stairs in the semi-darkness
He is tall , thin, has white hair, and is wearing a black suit with a carnation in his pocket.
Staring at him I am sure I am imagining him because I was reading a bit of a scary book about a ghost in plaid at that time, so I am not freaking out, yet. So, I close my eyes and re-open them confident that he will be gone.
But he’s still there.
So now I am getting a bit freaked out. So this time I close my eyes, turn my head away, and flick on the basement lights since the switch was right next to me and when I looked again, he was gone.
I never saw him again or any other apparitions, but he definitely left his mark.
Ewww that is creepy!
I haven’t had any scare-my-socks-off spooky/creepy experiences but weird stuff that defies an obvious logical explanation has happened from time to time. I’ve never kept a log of them though but I think I may start doing so in here. There’s probably stuff I’ve forgotten but here’s what comes to mind.
Unexplained events
Orbs*
We have outdoor cctv security cameras around the house. Two cameras cover the front of the house from different angles. Only on one camera do I ever see orbs on a fairly regular basis.
Cats
We have three kitties. They will often just stare at the stairs from the sofa or at a wall for no reason, which is always kinda freaky but may mean nothing, idk. ETA - all three cats absolutely love hanging out/sleeping on the landing, so there’s that, and that alone makes me think if there was anything, it wouldn’t be something ‘malevolent/sinister’ in nature. Here they are happily hanging out on their cat tree, which is situated on the landing right beside the door of the front bedroom (handle partially cut off in pic):
Lighting
We recently redecorated and added 2 lamps (a table and a floor lamp) to the upstairs landing. In the last couple of weeks, while I was upstairs and in sight of it; the table lamp switched off on its own (no fault/no loose plug). Then the day before yesterday, OH was outside jet-washing the driveway so I was alone inside the house in the bedroom, with the door open and both lamps were on (it’s a landing with no external windows hence the lamps) and they both switched off by themselves at the same time. We have Alexa/Echo but they’re not on timers so there’s no reason why they should have turned off, I haven’t been able to come up with a rational explanation yet.
Here’s the strangest part though; music had begun playing thru the Alexa on the landing and I assumed the OH had asked it to play, even though it struck me as odd considering he was outside jet-washing stuff, I figured maybe he was listening using the Alexa app on his phone via his cordless earbuds and the fact it was playing on the landing too was some kind of Alexa glitch (Alexa can be glitchy; answering unasked questions randomly for example) or something similar. After about half hour I told it to stop because I wanted to watch something on my phone. Later when I asked the OH if he was playing music and did he realise it had been playing upstairs while he was outside, he said he hadn’t played any music anywhere…
Weird personal experiences
The master ensuite & downstairs powder room*
Our ensuite is almost directly above the downstairs powder room and that section of the house is where the orbs mentioned above are seen outside. Sometimes (not always) when in either space, there’s a cool draught that hits the back of my neck, I used to put it down to the windows. Then last year we had double-glazing installed but it still happens from time to time, it’s weird.
The front bedroom*
The front bedroom is currently a spare chaotic-filled-with-‘stuff’ room (it’s on my list of things to organise). My middle daughter had the front bedroom when we first moved here over a decade ago and she never felt comfortable in the room for no apparent reason. Eventually, she asked to move to another bedroom and the front bedroom became a spare. End of story.
Until, middle daughter moved out and youngest daughter asked to move from the smallest bedroom into the front one approx a year later (middle daughter’s original bedroom). She would’ve been around 7/8yrs old at that time, all was fine for a year or two, then she began saying she didn’t like the room and that she saw ‘people’ who were scary. We’d comfort her and gave her fairy lights and other sleep-friendly lighting/soothing sound devices and put it down to kids being scared of the dark/overactive imagination etc. She stopped mentioning anything but often, she’d end up sleeping in our bed for an assortment of excuses. Then, around 18 months ago (now aged 13) she asked to move into the bedroom middle daughter had moved into and since then she said she likes it much better (she still wants to snuggle in with her mum whenever she’s feeling unwell though!)
*Worth mentioning that the front bedroom shares a wall with the master ensuite and it is situated above the garage (which, is the area where I see orbs outside sometimes). Also, the staircase leading to the landing has shared walls that only connect with either the ensuite, the downstairs powder room, or the front bedroom and no other room… food for thought, hmm
I’ll update if I remember anything else or something else weird happens.
That sounds totally creepy to me.
I hated the room I was given as a child, the one where I heard the growl under my bed. It always felt dark and oppressive.
My mom hated her room and it creeped her out. She never felt comfortable in it, and she would hear strange noises. She also had these lamps with the plastic covering the shade and said at night it sounded like someone was crinkling the plastic and it would wake her up.
Eventually, we switched rooms and were much happier.
However, when I moved in with my grandparents for college (it was a closer commute), they gave one of my brothers my room and put me back in the small room.
I hated it just as much as when I was a kid and whenever I would come home on weekends, I would barely sleep because I was too creeped out.
