Sarah Michelle Gellar takes on the role of Buffy Summers in this TV version of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” based on the film of the same title, which starred Kristy Swanson. Buffy is a Slayer, one in a long line of young women chosen for a specific mission: to seek out and destroy vampires, demons and other forces of darkness. Unlike her predecessors, Buffy establishes a group of supportive friends who aids her in her battles with evil, including Willow, Xander and Cordelia. Her battles with evil are frequent, since Sunnydale, where Buffy and friends live, sits atop a gateway to the realm of the demons.
Place to discuss the iconic series, which originally aired from 1997-2003.
I can’t tell you how obsessed I was with this show. I used to buy the box sets and they were like $79 each at the time. I still have a Buffy poster on my door, lol.
I hope you fall in love with it. Season 2 is my all-time favourite season. My cousin is 18 years younger than me and when she was finally old enough to watch it, I got her hooked. She even named her cat Buffy, lol.
First show I was ever OBSESSED about. I came in to the series a little late. First episode I saw was Becoming part 2. Weird place to start but I just caught it on tv and I bought bootleg VCR tapes off of eBay to catch up. Even managed to snag the unaired pilot, which I still have. On VCR tape lol. Found the website FanForum and read every single thing I could about it. I kind of miss that feeling. There’s no show that I really care about anymore. The last one, for me, was Veronica Mars.
I did a similar thing with bootleg VCR tapes for Dark Angel. Got into it the second season after it had been cancelled and managed to get the first season on VHS on Ebay. I had to send the person a certified cheque, lol.
I was also a member on FanForum and there was a site I used to lurk on called The Bronze Beta. It still exists, I just googled it, lol.
@scarlett45 I’m so excited for you! And to hear your take on it as someone who hasn’t watched it yet.
I still have the DVD box sets for seasons 1-5 (as well as the series on VHS that I recorded off of TV reruns). Sometimes on re-watch I do cringe a little (some pieces haven’t aged well) but on the whole it’s an excellent series.
As an aside, Alyson Hannigan just turned 50 last week - really drives home how long ago the series was. Makes me feel old.
I loved the first season of Angel. Doyle was my favourite character and I loved him and Cordelia together. I was so sad when they killed off the character and even more sad when the actor died in real life. The other seasons were fine except for Season 5 which I hated. But I never loved any of the other characters they tried to introduce after Doyle left.
I started my watch a few days late, and when David Boreanaz appeared in episode ONE I thought “ooooo I knew why we were all in love with this pairing 30 years ago.”
SMG also shipped Buffy/Angel.
I could have been brought to the Spuffy side if not for The bathroom scene in Seeing Red. Even in spoiler tags, I’m not calling it what it was to avoid spoiling for our first-time viewers, but IYKYK.
I loved Spike as a character, though. He added a lot to the show. More fun than Angel. I mean, Angel wasn’t good for Buffy either, but I did prefer their pairing to Spuffy.
SO I am up to Episode 7- which my Mom (who watched a few with me) said she wanted to see because she recognized some faces and thought “I didn’t know they were in this!” She recognized David Boreanaz from Bones! So funny.
I’m loving all the fashion (especially striped sweaters) and Buffy kicking ass. I like that even though Xander’s crush is unrequited he’s not an asshole (except for when he’s possessed, but that’s not him).
