A place to discuss the new costume drama staring Julianne Moore, Nicholas Galitzine and Tony Curran on Starz. Airing April 6, 2024 on Starz.
So, I loved Nicholas in Red, White and Royal Blue, so I certainly think he can play off of Julianne Moore as his mother, her acting is so strong- DUH, but it would be cool if she had a romance too. She is a gorgeous sexy woman, she belongs in the court intrigue. THOUGHTS?
I definitely will be watching because it looks like a hot ass mess! When I saw the trailer, I immediately went into a wikipedia black hole.
Mary Villiers WAS the original “Mommager”!
S01.E01: The Second Son
Determined to reclaim her family’s former glory, Mary Villiers urges her son George to embark on a risky endeavor.
Air date 4.5.24.
So many things in this episode were hilarious. And why are the French always wildin!!!
My mom and I are watching in a few hours, I will report back. The French are always wildin!
Edited to add- my Mom fell asleep on me, but I liked it!

I am very sensitive to how people with mental disabilities are portrayed in film, but I think they did a good job here. You “got it” with John, but it felt period appropriate without belittling him.
-
I wonder if the father thought George wasn’t his, and that’s why he beat him all the time, or was he just jealous of his good looks and youth?
-
Julianne Moore is playing the hell out of it. A woman that’s seen it all in middle age and working with the talents she has.

The modern hairstyles crack me up, but I appreciate that they reminded everyone that King James was Scottish, and the court intrigue that comes with that.
I totally picked up on this also. They both said some very vague things that made me go, what the hell did he/she mean by that??? Plus the father also seemed to recognize that George was queer, despite his fooling around with the maid.
Yes the father was a brute, who I’m sure blamed Mary for his first son having a mental disability (people act that way in 2024 much less 1594), but I think George was his. She mentioned syphillis but she had 2 children after George.
I think George was lucky and favored his mother in looks (his siblings resembled each other but he was the beauty), and the father was an evil man. George was young and gorgeous and quite sweet “emo” as some would say. He probably hated him for his kind heart, and he was an easy target. See how kindly he treated his brother and the maid- she wasn’t just a play thing, he was kind to her and cared for her safety.
I think Mary knew George’s kind heart could get him in all sorts of trouble so he had to be managed. Which she was willing to do. She did well for herself marrying that guy, but her eldest son was disabled and he was a brute, nothing to be done about that. George has more control over his future.
I was explaining to my mom why a noble man would take a new wife past childbearing years, if you wanted companionship you could just get a mistress; however socially and politically there are things a wife could do that a mistress couldn’t (hosting the king for example), and choosing a woman close to your age past menopause meant you wouldnt have more heirs and possibly piss off your grown kids from your first marriage. Yes you’d leave her something when you died but not the same as your kids having to split their inheritance with a brother.
Is this show worth watching?

I’m enjoying it so far. But I love messy 14th-18th century royal shit.
S01.E02: The Hunt
Mary resorts to drastic measures to earn George an opportunity to impress the King; George must pull out all the stops and go head-to-head with Earl Somerset in order to stand out and prove himself to the King.
Air Date: 4.12.24
Yeah Sommerset knows his youth and power are slipping which is why he’s SO JEALOUS. Killing young men left and right- George needs a bodyguard!
Okay, so did the bodyguard who ate the plums just pretend to be sick, or did he not die because maybe he was bigger/had more food in his stomach and took the letter to a man I don’t recognize?
Mary is getting a romance but I think that Julianne Moore doesn’t do nudity (which I understand).
I think trying to get John married is a bad plan. His father’s estate is bankrupt- who’s going to marry John with a mental disability and no money? They are better off getting the third son married off (maybe to someone with money who is pregnant and needs an husband quickly) and he will have resources to look after John along with George. I know the daughter has no dowry.
The next episode intrigues me.

That’s what I thought too. He was much bigger and the poison didn’t affect him as severely.
Glad to see I wasn’t the only one who didn’t recognize that dude. I thought it was because I wasn’t paying attention.
Episode 3 kind of felt like filer. George was in bed for half of it, but it was cool seeing Sommerset go DOWN.
I couldn’t find the preview for the next episode on YouTube though.

Him and his wife! When you’re nasty to everyone, there’s no incentive for anyone to have your back when the shit hits the fan.
Also love that Mary is running circles around everyone else with her strategy. Of course her get up was a part of her plan to manipulate the ex-husband into outing Sommerset’s wife.
All of episode 4 I kept saying “Listen to your brother George!”, and of course I was right! George off thinking (but not with his brain), and his brother thankfully had his back.
Tony Curran is doing a great job with this part. I was reminded of how much I enjoyed him in Defianceon Syfy about 10yrs ago, it’s a hard part, King James is a lecherous old man but we do feel sorry for him.
