Discuss the latest Canadian offshoot here.
I didn’t realize I had fallen so out of the loop on L&O shows. I didn’t know this was a thing. I might have to check it out!
For now, it’s not airing in the US. But there are alternatives, so…yeah. I have seen all 4 past episodes.
And it’s not that bad! (It started in late February.)
Someone else I know was curious and wanted to see the opening credits. Since I had already clipped it, here they are if you’re interested/curious. If not, cool!
After a two-week hiatus, there is supposedly a new episode airing on CityTV this Thursday.
Really enjoying it - superior to the mothership reboot, that’s for sure.
IMO, the influence from original CI is obvious. For example, in the first episode, “The Key To The Castle”, how Graff managed to go through that entrance to the empty room before anyone could stop him. (Bobby did that a lot.)
And the episode, “The Real Eve”, I’ll just be vague and say the ending sequence gave me strong Goren vibes. But Henry Graff still seems like his own character.
The Toronto CI TwitX account posted a preview of Thursday’s episode:

The series must be doing well. Just saw on TwitX that CityTV has renewed the show for Season 2. Hopefully, it will air in the US soon.

I guess it was inevitable: The official show account on TwitX has a preview clip up for this Thursday’s episode, and it involves a hockey team and sexual assault, etc.
Someone explained it was based on some real issues back around 2018 with a Canadian junior hockey team, so more “ripped from the headlines” fare!
There have been several hazing assaults/scandals in America in college and high school sports as well - I’m kind of surprised the Mothership or SVU haven’t done a ripped from the headlines episode about it - wouldn’t surprise me if they did one coming up at some point.
Anyone watch the season finale?
Damned if the ending didn’t give me sort of Endgame vibes. Not the case itself, but some personal revelations where Henry Graff was concerned.
And based on Frankie Bateman’s reaction, I think that was real, not some ruse to get a confession.
Now I’m curious as to where Season 2 will lead…
Watched episode 1 tonight - I enjoyed it. The case was good and the format was almost the same as American CI. The villain was fairly obvious but it was still a solid story overall, the ending was good with how Graff figured out the code and how they trapped the perp, and I liked Graff and Bateman, the 2 leads - Graff was somewhat similar to Goren and had some quirks. The one I didn’t care for was the Inspector supervising the detectives, she seemed to have a permanent scowl on her face and didn’t add much. I liked the lawyer in his one scene. Look forward to watching more of the show.
As they settled into the roles, I think everyone improved - as did the stories themselves. (Not that they were bad to start with, but they become - IMO! - a bit less predictable.)
I did like Karen Robinson’s Inspector Holness calling her half-brother a dumbass and such. Vivienne Holness has a bit of snark to her!
Episode 3 is where the most obvious Goren-esque qualities really first kicked in for me with Graff.
Crown Prosecutor Theo Forrester is also competent, even if - like with Carver - he doesn’t get a ton to do. It will be interesting to see if LOTCI ever visits the courtroom as its American counterpart did a few times.
And Lucy DeSilva, the M.E., I liked her, too. But like Forrester, she doesn’t seem to get a lot. Maybe like with Rodgers, that will eventually change.
Henry Graff is his own character, but it is also clear how much Bobby Goren influences him…
Noticed on eBay that a Blu-Ray set of the series is now being sold. But since there is no such listing on either the US or Canadian Amazon sites, my guess is it’s a bootleg.
ETA: Yep. The shipping comes from China. But there was no time wasted putting this on physical media.
Since OC has not had any US DVD releases [but has internationally], I have doubts this show will ever legally be out on DVD, especially since it hasn’t aired in the US to begin with.
Read in some article online - forget where, naturally! - that pre-production for Season 2 is supposed to begin sometime this month.
It makes me wonder if the show will premiere in the fall and have a longer season or if it will be held for later and keep the shorter number of episodes.
The season finale does make me curious as to how deep TPTB will go in fleshing out Graff and Bateman. I look forward to finding out. I definitely see the Goren parallels after that finale.
LONGER SEASON, LONGER SEASON!!! This was a great addition to the family. Much better than the reboot, much better than SVU has been in a decade.
Wendy, I get what you say about the ending confrontation between Graff and the perp in episode 3 - that was a good scene, it did remind me of some of Bobby Goren’s confrontations with perps. It was a good episode. And the Inspector has grown on me. I like this show from the episodes I’ve seen so far.
It’s as good as the Mothership revival IMO - I’m very partial to the Mothership as I love its formula and it will always be my favorite show, and I like the revival more than most, but it definitely has some flaws, particularly with legal stuff. I like how this Toronto CI follows the original CI’s formula pretty closely and has good cases. I look forward to watching more of it.
SVU is trash now - I may not even watch it next season, I have a hard time stomaching the Olivia worship, SVU is a shell of its former self. And I won’t even bother with OC now that it’s on Peacock. It’s nice to have a version of CI back along with the Mothership.
I hope you keep enjoying this, @Xeliou66 !
I think the stories and acting only got better as the season rolled along. There was a danger of the characters copying Goren and Eames, but I think TPTB did a great job in using some of the same qualities but still allowing these characters to be their own people.
Ah! Here is the article that says pre-production for Season 2 begins this month.
It’s mentioned in the first paragraph.
